A Natural Sweetener Made from Scraps…True Story!

Most of us are looking for simple ways to cut a few calories, especially after the holidays. I have a great tip for making your own natural sweetener from something you may typically throw away. It sounds way too good to be true, but it’s not!

Dried apple peel

What is this miraculous, mystery substance? Dried apple peels! It can be used to sweeten anything and it’s good for you!

Instructions

Scrub the apples well and peel. Dry the peels until they are crunchy. I put mine in a food dehydrator at 135 degrees for about 10 hours. This should also work in an oven on the lowest setting.

Next, grind the peels in a food processor or coffee grinder. Sift and store in an airtight container.

Enjoy!

See the instructions with accompanying pictures below:

Scrub the apples well. The peels will be concentrated, so make sure they are clean.

Peel the apples.

Dry out the peels until they are crispy. I put mine in a food dehydrator at 135 degrees for about 10 hours. You can also dehydrate in your oven on the lowest setting.

Grind the peels. I used a coffee grinder for this step. I have a cup for grinding coffee and a separate cup for grinding food and spices.

The peels are ready to use now if you like. However, I sifted mine and kept the larger pieces for baking quick breads and the finer grind for sweetening smoothies and drinks.

Keep in an airtight container and enjoy!
